Official temperature records have been maintained in New Zealand since shortly after European settlement began in 1840. Throughout the ensuing 150 years, mean temperature levels remain stable. But NIWA (National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research, the responsible government agency) has recently questioned the historical record, suggesting a long-term warming trend may have been hidden in the data. This paper examines the record in detaIi, and reaches a conclusion that there are statistical uncertainties that demand more robust re-assessment.
